How to Communicate With Your Web Designer?

Written on March 7, 2010 – 5:19 am | by Eric Marantan

Clients and web designers should ask the meaning of technical terms. Clients have technical terms specific to their businesses just like web designers have theirs. It is critically important that all of them be defined and understood so that no incorrect assumptions are made. Many web designers tend to lack of the skill of keeping a client in the process of web designing, thus making the whole long and unnecessary changes occur in time.

Be as specific as possible when a web site page needs to be changed. Being specific means sending the web designer the exact URL to the page. This helps a web designer who must look after many websites to go immediately to the page instead of having to spend time getting familiar with your site again if it has been awhile since it was worked on. A london website designer should be able to pick and choose the right colours and graphic to match a client’s existing brand or create a new brand if the business is new.

Understand the difference between a simple fix and a revision. A simple fix usually is something that takes anywhere from a few minutes to a handful of hours to correct. For example, a web designer may have missed a page title on one of the web pages and it takes no more than a few minutes to correct. On the other hand, a revision involves extensive modifications on a web page because a client changed their mind. A web designer has no problem differentiating between a simple fix and revision but the opposite can be true with clients because they don’t know what is involved. This can be costly for the web design company in terms of time and cost overruns. Plus, there is risk of losing a client because of delays. If your web designer tells you that what you want is a major revision, listen and be prepared to offer further monetary compensation and time on the project because of the added work.

Great tips on client to web designer communication Eric. In my experience, clients have asked for multiple extra revisions even though the contract said 2 revisions max, but I would always deliver anyway. Sometimes you gotta go out of your way to satisfy a client so that your company’s reputation remains excellent.
