Directory Submission is Worth Your Time?

Written on March 4, 2010 – 10:11 pm | by Eric Marantan

Have you always wanted to give directory submission a try but worried about its effectiveness for your site’s ranking? Some say the method is dated, while others recommend that everyone should do it, so who do you listen to? Well, here are some of the things that you should know about directory submission.

The search engines are only able to see the back link from the directory websites therefore they will be seen as votes. But as for how powerful and relevant they are, that will depend on the directory website themselves. Obviously, there are authority directories like Dmoz and Business.com which will pass a lot more weight to your site than directories that only started up a few months ago. Having said that, every link will help your website at the end of the day.

One of the most common misconceptions when it comes to directory submissions is that the links are buried in deep down within the site. But the truth is that it really doesn’t affect your site ranking at all, as long as the category you submitted to is related, then that’s fine.

Manual directories are almost always better than automatic ones because all the links are reviewed by human before they goes live, so the quality level will normally be better. Because spam is a major issue with online directories and the search engines would penalize those who contain a lot of spam. When they do so, your link will become unless so try to look around the directories first before you jump right onto the submission page.

Directory submission is like one of those tasks which is important and required for success but often missed out because of the simplistic of the method, and also the time issue. However, if you don’t feel like doing the work you can always hire someone to do the work for you. Luckily, the cost is very low if you look around on the web.

These people are professionals who does this for a living therefore they can do a much better job than you, and cost less for you! You can always start small – something like 1000 directories and then do another thousand 3 months later. You certainly don’t want to get too many links too quickly for a new site, because Google will flag up your site and put it in the sandbox. Make it seem natural and you will get the traffic slowly. All in all, directory submission is definitely something you should do for your website.

Dmoz is so hard to get listed to. I don’t know why they are so strict about it. Even if they do the check manually, which they should, it’s easy to judge if a website is a joke or not. Some of the entries in there aren’t even very good websites or old ones that doesn’t seem to be updated.
